Grays Harbor Community Foundation Awards Twin Harbors Skill Center Automotive and CNA Program $35,000.00 Grant Through Community Building Grants Program
Last year, the Grays Harbor Community Foundation received a request through our Community Building Grants program to support the Twin Harbors Skill Center Medical Assistant and Automotive programs.
Twin Harbors, A Branch of New Market Skills Center and founded in 2010, is a consortium of 12 high schools in 11 districts providing career and technical education (formerly vocational) to high school students interested in employment after high school and/or preparation for entering college or apprenticeship.
The Medical Assistant program is a collaboration with Grays Harbor College offering access to high school students to high demand, family wage jobs in the medical field. Through our funding, they were able to purchase new curriculum and program related needs.
A large part of the grant supported the expansion of the automotive program to incorporate electrical systems for vehicles aligned with industry standards.
Thanks to our grant, the district was able to purchase new equipment for their program. In the automotive program, they secured a number of new pieces of equipment as follows:
- Toolboxes and extra tools for the shop for all students to have access
- Lab Scope to work with new electronic systems in vehicles and help signal readings during diagnosis
- Scan Tool that scans new cars and programs
- Sander and Drill Press for use in the automotive program As a result, students are able to scan new vehicles and have better tool access. The drill press and sander have also been able to be used for our new welding program that began second semester this year. Leveraging that equipment for two programs has been extremely beneficial.
Students were able to secure a new level of ASE Certification because of these equipment and tool additions.
