HARBOR AFTER SCHOOL
When the bell rings at the end of each school day, not all kids have a stimulating, comfortable, or even safe place to go. After school programs in communities across the country have sought to prevent the sorts of problems which tempt and trouble kids in these often-unsupervised hours: delinquency, crime, victimization. The most visible program of its kind in Grays Harbor, Harbor After School began operating in Fall 2001 with programs at Miller Junior High in Aberdeen and at Elma Middle School. In 2002 the Grays Harbor Community Foundation offered early support to this upstart program with two small grants. Again in 2003 a donor-advised fund provided anonymous support to Harbor After School. And once more in 2008, a large donor-advised grant was provided by Paige Hounsley, the trustee for the Abel-Weatherwax Foundation that has for years used the Community Foundation to administer their local planthropy.
