AREA OF INTEREST FUNDS
Within the broad reach of our community grants program, which aims to support Grays Harbor County as a whole, some donors may wish to support a narrower range of charitable interests. Some may be interested in giving their support to local needs in health, education, youth, arts and culture, or human services. Others may be
interested in giving to a specific community within Grays Harbor -- Elma or
McCleary, the South Beach area, the Wishkah Valley community, Amanda Park, the
Quinault Nation, Aberdeen, Hoquiam, Montesano. It is important to realize, as it was in the case of unrestricted funds, that even within a narrower category of need or within a specific community, the need for long-term flexibility is paramount. Within the fast-changing communities of Elma and McCleary, for instance, we don't know what the most important projects and programs to support will be in 10 or 20 years. In the North Beach area, we don't know where the most promising areas of community development might be in a generation. Likewise, if our desire is to improve the quality of healthcare in Grays Harbor and we want to give a gift that will last for decades, we have to recognize that no one knows what the most urgent issues of the day will be when our grandchildren become the leaders of this community.
A FLEXIBLE SOLUTION
Given the challenge of these long-term scenarios, the most promising solution is an area of interest fund.
An area of interest fund supports projects and programs through our community grants program. Only those projects and proposals matching the goals of an area of interest fund will be eligible to receive support from that fund. (Of course, with the broader support of our unrestricted Fund for Grays Harbor, all the nonprofit organizations serving residents of Grays Harbor would potentially be eligible for support from our foundation.)
As community needs change over time, an area of interest fund will always retain the flexibility to fund the most promising projects and programs aimed at meeting that area of need. We believe that this long-term flexibility offers donors a more intelligent way to give back to local communities.
